Open Question: Can my landlord notify me that I owe 2 months in back rent all of a sudden?

I forgot to pay rent 1 month and was never notified. I paid my rent late this month and was served with an eviction notice the day before I paid, saying that I owed 2 months in back rent and needed to vacate in 17 days. I live in Vermont. I'm not positive that I forgot to pay rent but that's what I am assuming. It is also possible that she may have not received one of the checks I made out to her. Aren't I supposed to have 31 days to vacate? Shouldn't she have notified me the first time I missed rent? Should she send another notice with an updated balance now that I've paid half of what I owe? or even drop the eviction? I haven't had a chance to contact her, and now it's Saturday so I'll have to wait until Monday to figure it out, but I want to get my facts straight before she tries to tell me some bullsh!t....
