News item from The Post-Standard daily newspaper, July 20, 1978: CAR CRASH FRIGHTENS TOWN A man was tragically killed in a car accident on E Adams Street yesterday. Said man was being chased at the time by a group of police officers after he had supposedly robbed a bank. It has been discovered that he was Carter Mears, an unemployed, married, father of one. The crash also injured one William Porter, a thirty-five-year-old Geography teacher and father of three from Vermont. Both cars were destroyed. No police officers present would give comment. Claudia Kent was the most frightened of all. She knew that if it had happened two seconds earlier, her son would have been killed. He had been only six at the time, and his mother had let go of his hand. It was just one of those moments; she had spotted a friend, and she couldn’t hold up her right hand to wave – it was holding on to paper bags full of groceries. The moment their hands had become unlinked, Arthur had teetered away across the road. There was a brief yell as his mother screamed out his name, a pause as he turned around, having crossed the road, and an almighty crash as the two cars collided. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks.
